Turn Your Students into Sight-reading Superstars!
The ability to sight-read is one of the most important skills for any musician. Think of a typical gig by a professional musician. There are a limited number of rehearsals and often the musician is given the music just before the first rehearsal. While our students are not professionals, they should be able to see something on the printed page and be able to comfortably react and perform what they see.
Unfortunately sight-reading is often left out of the majority of orchestra & band curricula as something “assumed” to be learned. We all know that in order to be better sight-readers, students must be trained on the necessary fundamental skills of sight-reading!
This post will provide school band and orchestra directors a variety of strategies and techniques to integrate sight-reading into the daily lessons, to develop and enhance a students’ ability to read, count, and correct performance errors on the fly.
