Quick access to instruments at home = more practicing!
When I’m at home, I generally have a tendency to practice more when I have quick access to my instrument. I keep violin and viola on a wall hanger in my studio and it’s easy to grab my instrument quickly and start playing.
I encourage my students to do the same, especially when they are home on weekends or during breaks. I tell them that if they leave their instrument in an accessible (but safe!) location that they will be likely to practice more frequently. When the instrument is out of its case and always “looking at you,” it’s simple to pick it up and play a little.
To allow this to happen, I tell my students to purchase a violin/viola wall hanger or cello/bass stand. These items aren’t too expensive and can really make an impact on student achievement.
Violin/viola hangers should be mounted to solid wall, preferably directly to a wall stud and not using drywall anchors. I just don’t trust drywall anchors with my precious instrument! The violin/viola hangers have a handy hook for the bow as well.
The cello/bass stands are adjustable to fit most instruments, are easy to set up in a corner of a room and can be folded up for storage when not in use. Alternately, cello cradles are also very nice, but a little more expensive. I haven’t used cello hangers, but they are made and I would be interested to hear feedback on their use.
